Vanessa Kirby took the Best Actress Volpi Cup at the awards ceremony for the 2020 Venice Film Festival. The English actress was awarded for her lead performance in PIECES OF A WOMAN. The harrowing drama about a couple struggling after a failed home birth is the English-language debut of Hungarian filmmaker Kornél Mundruczó who directed it from a script by Kata Wéber.
Kirby also presented another film in the Venice competition, the drama THE WORLD TO COME directed by Mona Fastvold.
PIECES OF A WOMAN also stars Shia LaBeouf, Molly Parker, Sarah Snook, Benny Safdie, Jimmie Falls and Ellen Burstyn. Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to the film.
When an unfathomable tragedy befalls a young mother (Vanessa Kirby), she begins a year-long odyssey of mourning that touches her husband (Shia LaBeouf), her mother (Ellen Burstyn), and her midwife (Molly Parker).
Director Kornél Mundruczó (White God, winner of the Prix Un Certain Regard Award, 2014) and partner/screenwriter Kata Wéber craft a deeply personal meditation and ultimately transcendent story of a woman learning to live alongside her loss.
