ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT, NAVALNY, PINOCCHIO and RRR among the films awarded at the 2023 Academy Awards.

After receiving top honors at the BAFTA film awards, Edward Berger’s Netflix war drama All Quiet On The Western Front has won four Oscars at the 2023 Academy Awards. The recent adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 anti-war novel won Best International Feature Film, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography and Best Production Design awards. The picture is the first German language film to win in the International Feature Film category since Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s The Lives of Others won the award in 2007.

Guillermo Del Toro has claimed his third personal Academy Award for the Netflix movie Pinocchio, which picked up the Best Animated Film Oscar. Del Toro is now the first person to have won Oscars for Best Picture, Director, and Animation. And Netflix is the first streaming platform to win this category. The haunting stop-motion musical fantasy was inspired by the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi and informed by Gris Grimly's illustrations of the 2002 edition of the book.

The CNN/Warner Bros film Navalny won the Best Documentary Oscar at the Academy Awards. The film, directed by Daniel Roher, follows an investigation by CNN and the journalist group Bellingcat about the poisoning and imprisonment of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Navalny premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2022 and won a BAFTA Award for Best Documentary in February 2023.

In a field full of big contenders, including Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Diane Warren, RRR got its moment in the Oscar spotlight at the 2023 Academy Awards when M.M. Keeravani’s song Naatu Naatu received the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Naatu Naatu became the first song from a Tollywood film to win best original song at the Oscar.
