Forty years after the death of Elvis Presley, PROMISED LAND takes his 1963 Rolls Royce for a musical road trip across the country he left behind.
Set against the events of the 2016 election, the film captures a nuanced portrait of the American dream at a critical moment in the nation’s history. From the Deep South to New York, Las Vegas and countless points between, a wide spectrum of Americans – some luminary, others unknown – join the journey, expressing themselves in word and song in Elvis’ Rolls.
What emerges over thousands of miles is a parallel portrait of a man and his country. Both rose like a rocket on the world’s stage. But where a small town boy became a “King” and met an untimely end, so too his country, once a republic, became an empire, and now faces an uncertain future with the closest thing she has ever had to a monarch at her helm.
