A scruffy man named Busu introduces the story of the Ciraulo family. When their daughter is killed by a stray bullet in a Palermo gun fight, the Ciraulo family decides to use the state compensation paid to Mafia victims to buy a Mercedes. Intended as a symbol of wealth and dignitiy, the car becomes a symbol of the misery of wealth, an instrument of ruin and defeat.
